Nature Astaxanthin is a red carotenoid, a pigment produced by plants, fungi and bacteria, but most prevalent in algae. It is always extracted from Haematoccus Pluvialis, which is a kind of freshwater unicellular green algae. It can accumulate astaxanthin in a large amount and present red color, so it is called Haematococcus, also known as Haematococcus Pluvialis.

H. Pluvialis sourced ASX is a potent antioxidant with many biological functions and is widely used in the fields of health food applications and biomedical research. The U.S Food and Drug Administration(FDA) approved ASX as a dietary supplement and notified the “generally recognized as safe” (GRAS) status to H. pluvialis derived ASX product. Multiple preclinical and human clinical studies involving orally administered ASX in doses ranging from 4 mg to 100 mg/day have shown no adverse or toxic effects. Human clinical studies have found ASX to be safe for human consumption and orally bioavailable. H. pluvialis derived ASX has been reported to be more bioavailable, probably due to the presence of astaxanthin esters. Maximal blood concentration of ASX has been reported to occur between 8 and 10 h after ingestion of 40 mg in healthy adults. Following consumption of 40 mg ASX, the plasma elimination half-life period was estimated as 15.9 ± 5.3 h and the same for 100 mg ASX ingestion was estimated as 52 ± 40 h. No significant adverse effects of ASX have been reported so far in any published human trials. These results support the safety profile of ASX for human consumption.
